Indianapolis · Artist Studio Collective

Where the city
comes to make.

A community of working artists on the banks of the Wapahani — the White River.

Our colors, borrowed from the building itself.
What we are

Wapahani — the old Native name for the White River, meaning white sands — is 17 working artists with private studios, shared space, and doors that open to the public.

Our story

Reclaimed warehouses,
back on the river.

These studios began as rundown warehouses across the street from Lilly’s tech center — buildings Stephen J. Alexander bought up and brought back to life while developing the riverfront just south of here. When the Indianapolis Arts Council saw the hardwood floors and tall windows, the art center was born.

A century ago this stretch of the White River was lined with stockyards and slaughterhouses that fouled the water. A hundred and fifty years later, it was time to fix the damage — and bring people and art back to the river. Read the full story →

Having graduated from the Royal College of Art, London, in 1993, the German-born artist is one of the resident artists at Wapahani Arts Center. Kiekeben's works take form as immersive digital wall drawings, paintings, metal friezes, and sequences of original prints. Projects often play on a minimalist cut and paste aesthetic and include many tailor-made and site-specific installations –– such as ‘Cascade’, ‘Quantum Ice’, or ‘Loop’ –– and have been exhibited internationally in private and public galleries and museums since the late 1980s. Friedhard Kiekeben was an Associate Professor of Fine Art at Columbia College Chicago for 20 years, and the artist now moved to Indianapolis for new projects. Currently the artist is working on new ‘Overpaintings’ (taking inspiration from the White River), and a large solo show of walldrawings at Evanston Arts Center in the Spring of 2026. Friedhard Kiekeben is also recognized as an innovator and publisher in the field of safer printmaking and painting and will offer specialist courses at Wapahani Arts Center from December 2025. Meet Avon Waters! @avon Another day closer to the studio open house THIS FRIDAY! Meet Avon Waters! @avonwatersarts Avon's art dances on the knife’s edge between representationalism and abstraction. Allowing the painting to lead him—it decides which side of the knife’s blade it falls. The surface, layering, and the physical processes he uses vary from painting to painting and he is always experimenting with tools, materials, and techniques. Avon's interest in conservation pushes him toward making landscapes that he wants to escape into, but do not exist. Inspired by observations and plein air studies, he aspires for these made-up spaces to possess a fragility that humans wish to enter but fear might break or destroy what is there. www.avonwaters.com YouTube: @PastelWithAvon We're so excited to have y'all back in the studio!
